Switch Groov Exp – Bon Très Bien

A neat little latin jazzy groover from French group producer, Switch Groov Exp. I’m not quite sure why, but when I listen to this, it makes me wish I was sitting in a bar somewhere in the Central Americas – by the sea, of course – sipping on a rum and lime juice cocktail. Alas, I’ll have to settle for my own reality: a cup of tea on the couch.

Chico & Rita – The Movie

Something a little bit different, I suppose. Yesterday I caught the flick ‘Chico & Rita’ on the big screen. It tells the tale of a gifted young Cuban pianist who falls for a sultry Cuban singer, and follows the many adventures and tribulations that result from their initial union. Havana, New York, Las Vegas and Paris all form backdrops in this feature length animated story directed by Fernando Trueba, with the beautiful artwork coming from the hand of artist Javier Mariscal.

Here’s the trailer:

Anyway, the music that accompanies this movie is wonderful. Worth tracking down the DVD when it gets a release. Same goes for the inevitable soundtrack!

DJ Tahira – Brasil’s finest selector!

I’ve always eagerly awaited the next DJ Tahira mix to be posted on his website. Tahira’s musical philosophy is much like my own – why stick to one or two genres in a set!

His DJ sets tend to cover everything from folk and brasilian classics, to funk, hip-hop and house. Anything may get a run, as long as it has soul. Anyway, you’ll find his April mix here.

Banda Los Hijos De La Nina Luz – Dejala Corre

The guys at Soundway are masters of rediscovering buried latin musical gems – ‘Deljala Corre’ is one that may have passed some ears. It features a heavy cumbia beat, sporadic horns and infectious calls.

Now, if only to get to a Colombian beach party, crack open a bottle of chilled Aguila, and turn this mutha up …

Sinto – Man On The Banks

Wonderful latin funk sounds from the late 70s. From what I understand, Sinto were actually a German collective.

The song is essentially divided into two parts: a slow winding groove that pauses before launching into a feverish, percussion led latin jazz-funk groove.

Re-issued on Tramp a year or two back.
